Checking all the documentation was in order he closed the file, picked up his keys, wallet and phone and made his way to Jon’s room.

‘Come in!’ barked Jon.

‘Here’s the paperwork you wanted. I’ll see you later this afternoon. Give me a call if you need anything.’

‘Will do. We’ll catch up later,’ he replied taking the proffered documents.

The girls flopped down into a double patio seat on the terrace of a pavement café opposite the harbour, their bags brimming with supplies.

‘Oh that’s nice!’ exclaimed Keri kicking off her sandals and stretching her long golden legs.

‘I never expected us to get the majority of stuff so quickly,’ said Maria. ‘I thought we’d have to shop around quite a bit more. We did really well!’

‘That first shop had a terrific selection – all the colours under the sun in gemstones and not too expensive either!’

The waitress came over to take their drinks order and placed two white coasters onto the table in front of them. Keri lowered her sunglasses shielding her eyes and leaned back into the comfortable seat to watch the world go by. A gecko slithered up the side wall making Keri jump. ‘I don’t think I’ll ever get used to them!’ she shrieked. ‘One ran out in front of me on the balcony the other night. Frightened me to death!’

‘We get loads of them in the bay. They come down from the mountains and hide under the rocks. We’ve got one that lives at the bottom of the garden. He darts in and out of the tiniest crevice. Annys calls him her pet. He comes quite close to her now but won’t have anything to do with me. Wonder how he’ll react when we’ve got the pup!’

The drinks arrived and the girls settled back into their seats watching the activities in the harbour. Vessels unloading their goods, reloading and refuelling. Dusty trucks filled to the brim with wares heading all over the island. Port workers shouting animatedly to one another, arms flailing to make themselves heard. Passengers on a ferry disembarking from one of the neighbouring islands. Day-trippers queuing for the return journey with their souvenirs, carefully gift-wrapped in the unique island paper – light brown and blue stripes with outlines of seashells. Keri sipped her chilled drink, her eyes drawn to a group of school children having a picnic at the side of the beach in a sheltered area, chatting excitedly to one another, with teachers fussing over them making sure they’d all got their sunhats on.

‘Maria. You’ll never guess who stayed over last night…’ said Keri grinning from ear to ear.

‘Did he? Oh! How exciting!’ exclaimed Maria giving Keri her full attention. ‘Come on…spill the beans!’

‘It wasn’t planned. Just kind of happened. One minute we were standing in the doorway, then the next, well, we were in bed! What more can I say!’

‘Plenty!’ said Maria smiling broadly. ‘No, seriously, you two are made for each other!’

‘Thanks Maria. I feel wonderful when I’m with him. He makes me feel so special.
